Port Elizabeth

The Nelson Mandela Metro (including Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch) is the gateway to the Eastern Cape Region, its well-equipped airport and harbour linking South Africa with other national and international destinations.

Known as the "Friendly City", Port Elizabeth is located on the south-eastern coast, 763 km east of Cape Town. A superb value-for-money holiday base, Port Elizabeth offers a diverse selection of attractions as a family-fun holiday destination including scenic nature trails, historic heritage, magnificent wildlife, cultural experiences and countless water sport activities.

Algoa Bay's 40 km of breathtaking coastline boasts a perfect combination of warm water, protected beaches and is complemented by Port Elizabeth's wonderful climate, which has been rated as having the fourth best weather of any coastal city in the world.

The Port Elizabeth area also supports the most diverse array of vegetation types in South Africa as five of the country's seven terrestrial biogeographic areas are represented in the Eastern Cape.

The Bay, which is a favoured draw-card for beach and watersport enthusiasts is fast becoming known as South Africa's watersport capital and offers activity throughout the year, especially wind-surfing and fishing. In fact, Algoa Bay is regarded as one of the best sailing venues in the world, while scuba diving is of world class quality with beautiful reefs, shipwrecks, fish and colourful coral species.

St Francis Bay

Touted as the country’s answer to ‘little Venice’, St Francis Bay lies just 90 kilometres west of Port Elizabeth - a series of little man-made canals and waterways that lend themselves perfectly to boating, swimming and other water sports.

St Francis Bay is the playground of dolphins, whales and the wealthy, the bay magnificent with a white sandy St Francis Bay beach that offers some of the safest bathing on the coast and some fine opportunities to fish on the rocks. Surfers flock here, as they do to most of this part of the coast, for its waves; and the fabulous beaches are surrounded by nature reserves, making them alive with the calls of birds and an incredible escape from the city lifestyle that ensnares most of us.

It gets pretty tricky around here to remember just which St Francis you’re in. The bay includes Port St Francis, St Francis Bay, Cape St Francis and Oyster Bay. St Francis Bay lies alongside Cape St Francis at the estuary of the Kromme River, navigable for about 10 kilometres with many twists and turns that make it an amazing stretch along which to boat.

Essentially a little holiday village, St Francis Bay includes a marina and a wonderful collection of white-walled thatched homes set right on the waters of the canals. The small boat harbour here offers sheltered anchorage for fishing vessels and other ocean going vessels, and each home has its own mooring.

The St Francis Lighthouse, erected to warn ships of the reef that juts out beyond Sea Point, almost a kilometre out to sea, now marks one of the ‘corners’ of the African coast. The Irma Booysen Flora Reserve lies close by and offers some wonderful opportunities to see local fynbos. Otherwise, your time is given over to pleasure, eco and river cruises, surfing, swimming and generally enjoying the good life.

About Holiday Home Accommodation

My inspiration to start Holiday Home Accommodation: Showcase privately owned holiday homes in the Eastern & Western Cape, South Africa.

Making the transition from being a world traveller and accommodation owner to working in the reservations industry for the last 7 years, managing the reservations for a 300 sleeper resort as well the owner’s properties around the world and my background in the print and design industry which assists to keep in touch with the online visual impact of my product. It seemed a logical step to start a site like Holiday Home Accommodation.

My passion for travel is shared with my family and any chance we get we hit the road and discover new places. I have been unanimously elected minister of travel and entertainment and never fail to perform and discover hidden gems. Getting to know many accommodation owners has made me realise that many of these privately owned holiday home gems are not marketed adequately simply due to a lack of knowledge to get the right exposure.
